Mission Cemetery
This monument was erected July 28, 1996, in recognition of those buried in the Mission Cemetery from 1909 to 1922.
In 1964, the City of Grande Prairie approved the transfer of the Mission Cemetery to a section of the Grande Prairie Cemetery in accordance with the law. Sections of private property and adjacent roadways along Bear Creek were eroding. The property of La Corporation Episcopal Catholique Romaine de Grouard, also known as the Mission Cemetery, was at risk.
By September 26, 1966, the remains of the Mission Cemetery were relocated to this gravesite in the Grande Prairie Cemetery. The City of Grande Prairie extended every effort to determine the names of all those interred in the Mission Cemetery. Available records indicate that 123 individuals were buried in the Cemetery; however, the identity of only 61 individuals has been confirmed.
This monument commemorates those identified and unidentified persons formerly interred in the Mission Cemetery.
