Boards, Committees & Commissions
The City of Grande Prairie, like many Alberta municipalities, relies heavily on the advice and recommendations from Council members, staff and volunteers sitting on boards, committees and commissions. A Council committee is a committee, commission, board or other body established by Council under the Municipal Government Act. The establishment of boards, committees and commissions are:
- to act in an advisory capacity to Council.
- to provide further opportunities for public input into the political forum.
- to facilitate a more informed decision-making process.
Boards, committees and commissions will review material, weigh alternatives, and make recommendations to Council. Council is then able to make more informed decisions while substantially expediting the decision-making process.
Some committees and commissions may also fill a quasi-judicial role, which means that the committee has the authority to make decisions and judgments as provided for in the Municipal Government Act.
At the City of Grande Prairie, members of Standing Committees, Council Committees and Council Representatives to external boards, commissions and committees are appointed from within Council. Representatives from the public to various boards, commissions and committees are appointed by Council annually, usually in December from a pool of applicants. Some boards, committees and commissions are of an "internal operational" nature and therefore do not include public members.
The following is a list of the boards, committees and commissions that the City Council has either formed or participates in. A detailed description of the boards, committees and commissions are available via the links below.
