City Council Highlights – January 11, 2010
Snow Removal Presentations
Council heard from two delegations with concerns about the City enforcing the snow removal bylaw on Kateri Drive. They asked Council to find alternatives to having parking banned from the street up until April 15. Presenters indicated most houses have only one parking spot and alleyways are not ploughed or lit. The Public Works Committee will hear further presentations and make any recommendations on adjustments to the bylaw to Council.
Reserve Removed
Council passed a resolution to enable the Reserve designation to be removed from Plan 3780HW, Block 3, Lot R. This enables the Regional Authority of the Northwest Francophone Education No. 1 to complete a transfer of land to Stepping Stones Daycare. The property is located at 101 Street and 108 Avenue.
Public Hearing Recessed
A public hearing on Bylaw C-1100-155 was recessed to Monday, February 8. The amendment would enable a dispatch office to be located in the Central Commercial District.
Road Closure Bylaw
Second and third readings were given to Bylaw C-1235 to repeal Road Closure Bylaw C-456 (closing part of 102 Ave). The road closure was not registered with Land Titles and the road closure now would result in a dead end occurring at the Army and Navy complex.
Committee Appointment
Fletcher Bootle was appointed to the Assessment Review Board for the remainder of a three-year term, ending in December.
Multiplex Theming
Council awarded the amended theming package for the Aquatics and Wellness Multiplex to Studio Y Creations Inc. for $886,631 as the most qualified bidder meeting specifications. Administration was directed to reduce the number of palm trees and one dinosaur in the adult whirlpool area. A trompe-l’oeil style mural will be added in the flow rider area.
Dispatch Services
Council approved renewing a contract with the Municipal District of Big Lakes to provide emergency fire dispatch services for three years, to Dec. 31, 2012.
