Policy: 801, Fire Department Staffing Levels

POLICY NO:

801

APPROVAL DATE: January 10, 2000
TITLE: Fire Department Staffing Levels REVISION DATE:
SECTION: Protective Services (800)
DEPARTMENT: Fire

POLICY STATEMENT

The City of Grande Prairie Fire Department will provide a minimum on duty staffing of four (4) response personnel. When, due to an emergency incident, the staffing level falls below four (4) response personnel, the Fire Commander will be notified. At 15 minutes into the incident, the Fire Commander will be notified and at that time will determine whether to call back off-duty staff, based upon the anticipated length of the incident.

REASON FOR POLICY

Identification of minimum staffing levels for the Fire Department will:

  1. Ensure that emergency services are readily available and will respond in a timely manner when requested.
  2. Ensure that a standard level of service is consistently applied.
  3. Reduce risk for the community when the Fire Department is already committed to an emergency.
