25th Anniversary Celebration

The Dave Barr Arena's 25th Anniversary was celebrated in 2007. An open house was held in September and we were pleased to have Sharon Barr as a guest speaker. Sharon shared special memories of her father and his commitment to our community, particularly where hockey is concerned. The evening included an open house with guest speakers, a free skate and a large "hockey puck" cake.

1982 Drawing - EckhardtThe grand opening of the Dave Barr Arena was held on March 5, 1982.  The Dave Barr Arena was named in honour of Mr. Dave Barr. Mr. Barr was a very influential supporter of sports in Grande Prairie and was Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board for many years.

From the opening until 1982 the arena was operated and maintained by the City of Grande Prairie, then by Grande Prairie Minor Hockey up until 2003 when the City once again took over operations with Minor Hockey remaining as the primary user on weekends and weekday evenings.

Over the years the Arena expanded to include first one, then two playschool classrooms and now hosts a wide variety of users throughout our two seasons, ice and dry space.

The Dave Barr Arena grew from the original arena shell in 1982 to become a Community Centre where we host a variety of arena and dry space sports.  Our facility is home to
The Kid’s Place Playschool and summer programs and a concession catering to in-house events. The upstairs playschool doubles as a meeting space in the evening and on weekends.

In July 2007 a request for proposals was issued for a potential expansion of the Dave Barr Community Centre.  The expanded facility would include a second ice surface and other possible amenities to address the increasing need for community infrastructure.
