Parking Enforcement

Further information can be found in the City of Grande Prairie's Traffic Bylaw #C1166
Downtown Parking

  • Parking meters downtown accept quarters, loonies, and toonies.  They do not take nickels or dimes.
  • Metered time increases at a rate of 30 minutes per $0.25, up to a maximum of 2 hours on the meter.
    • This time limit is intended to keep the flow of traffic moving through the city core.  Please encourage employees not to park at parking meters.
  • In special circumstances, application can be made to have a set of meters bagged.  There is an administrative fee of $25, plus $5/day for each meter head.
  • Remember that if you are parked illegally, you can be ticketed every thirty minutes!

Overdimensional Vehicles

Where "overdimensional vehicle" refers to a vehicle or vehicle and trailer combination with a combined gross weight exceeding 8,000 kilograms or an overall length exceeding 8.0 metres:
  • Truck routes, as designated by Schedule 1 of the Traffic Bylaw, shall be used by all overdimensional vehicles, except for loading and unloading at destinations within the City, provided the shortest distance to and from the truck route is used.
  • No overdimensional vehicle shall park on a highway within the City not designated as a truck route
  • No vehicle other than a private passenger vehicle, recreational vehicle, or commercial vehicle which is not classified as an overdimensional vehicle shall park in a Residential District for longer than is necessary for loading and unloading.
Abandoned Vehicles

  • Abandoned vehicles fall under the Traffic Safety Act (Alberta).
  • A vehicle is considered to be abandoned if left on a highway, or on public or private property without consent of the owner or person in control or possession of the property, for more than 72 hours.
  • A peace officer will cause any abandoned vehicle to be removed (towed) and taken to a suitable storage place
Paying Tickets

  • Parking tickets can be paid at the City Hall counter, in the night deposit, at the RCMP detachment, online at www.muniportal.ca, or by mail to:

Private Property Appointments

  • Private Property Appointments are made to authorize civilians, typically residents in apartment complexes and condos, to write parking violation tickets within their building's designated parking area
  • The process begins by issuing a complaint to Enforcement Services regarding a non-tenant parking in a tenant's parking stall.  A Peace Officer will then attend the location to ensure that signs are correctly posted.
  • After signs are checked, an owner or manager must write a letter to Enforcement Services with the following:
    • The name, address, and phone number of the person to be appointed
    • The municipal address of the property
    • The legal address of the property
  • After the information in the letter is confirmed, a letter is sent to the Mayor for his signature
  • Once the letter has been received back from the Mayor, an appointment is made for the person to come to the detachment and be sworn in, after which time an officer will conduct a small training session for the person.
