Photo Laser
Nationally and Provincially, the RCMP have adopted the Road Safety Vision 2010 concept of significantly reducing deaths and injuries resulting from traffic collisions by the year 2010. One of K-Division's goals is to see a reduction of 20% in serious collisions resulting from speed. In Grande Prairie, a "benchmark" has been established by the RCMP through analysis of collision data from 1997 - 2001. Currently, greatest efforts are geared toward daytime violations with some operations carried out on evenings and weekends.
In 2002, the City purchased an "Autovelox" Sodi laser photo enforcement device. This device consists of a transmitter that sends three lasers out perpendicular to the road. As a vehicle passes through, it automatically senses the vehicle and calculates the vehicle speed. If the vehicle is over the tolerance set by the operator, a photo is taken. For legal reasons, the device is monitored throughout its operations. Operators of this unit must meet certain training standards; they complete training in the operation of standard police RADAR and Laser, as well as training on the specific unit they will be operating.
