Red Light Cameras
What is a Red Light Camera Enforcement System?
The Red Light Camera Enforcement System is part of a citywide safety program operated by Grande Prairie Enforcement Services in an effort to reduce the number of red light violations and intersection crashes. The system operates twenty-four hours a day to capture evidence of red light runners.
What is a red light violation?
A red light violation occurs when a vehicle crosses a limit line (stop line) and proceeds through an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. This includes making a right turn without coming to a complete stop before proceeding. It is not a red light violation if the vehicle has passed the limit line at the time the signal turned red. At no time will a ticket be issued if the vehicle crosses the limit line while the traffic signal is still yellow.
What do the cameras photograph?
The cameras capture digital video and still image evidence of a violation, including front and rear images of the violating vehicle. One camera shows the vehicle crossing the stop line and proceeding through the intersection while the traffic signal is red. A time-synchronized second camera captures critical vehicle and license plate information of the front and rear of the vehicle.
Do the cameras photograph every vehicle?
No. The Red Light Camera Enforcement System only captures vehicles that run the red light.
What if I wasn't driving at the time of the violation?
If you were not driving the vehicle at the time of the alleged violation, you have several options. All of the information is explained on the back of the printed notice that is sent out with the violation ticket.
Can I view evidence of the violation?
Yes. You are encouraged to view the event either over the Internet or in person. To view it in person you will need to schedule an appointment at the Grande Prairie Enforcement Services / RCMP Detachment. To view the video on-line, you will need:
- the ticket/violation number. This can be found in the top left of the violation ticket. It is a 10 digit number starting with "A" and ending in letter; and
- the owner's MVID number. The MVID number can be found on the registration for the vehicle or the owner's drivers license (found below the bar code on the face of the drivers license).
To view a copy of a video, you will be directed to a website administered by the City's contractor who is providing the red light camera system. Click here to view a copy of your red light camera violation.
