Family & Community Support Services (FCSS)

Vision

A Balanced, Engaged Community

Mission

We are enriching our community by:

  • Animating meaningful community growth and change
  • Exploring emerging possibilities and potentials for community action
  • Enriching community partnerships and relationships
  • Providing broad based preventative social services

The FCSS philosophy is based on a belief that self-help contributes to a sense of integrity, self-worth and independence. The programs developed are intended to help individuals in their community to adopt healthy lifestyles, thereby improving the quality of life and building the capacity to prevent and/or deal with crisis situations should they arise.

The Family and Community Support Services Program is administered provincially through the Department of Children’s Services. The FCSS program is designed to provide preventive community based services, planned and delivered with a strong volunteer component, to address community needs.

The Province provides funding to municipalities, based on a formula that takes into consideration population and median income. Municipalities are required to provide a 20% contribution and may, if they wish, establish a volunteer Board to administer the program. The City of Grande Prairie has chosen to administer the program through the Community Services Department.  City Council acts as the FCSS Board and makes policy and funding decisions
