Minimum Firefighter Qualifications:
- 18 years of age
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid drivers license minimum class 3 and 4 with air brake (Q endorsement) or ability to obtain those classes
- No criminal record
- NFPA 1001 Level II certification (see Fire ETC.)
- Emergency Medical Responder (with Alberta College of Paramedics registration, formerly APPA, or ability to get it.)
- Good physical fitness and pass a job related physical fitness test
- Satisfactory medical which also includes:
- normal color vision
- visual acuity of 20/30 or better in best eye and not less than 20/50 in weaker eye (aided or unaided)
- no more than 30 decibels hearing loss in either ear average at 500 1000 2000 and 3000 C.P.S.

A fully trained Firefighter is a skilled professional who uses modern equipment, methods and techniques to undertake a range of activities associated with the preservation of life and property.
Each platoon, led by a Fire Officer, works as a team. Although each Firefighter has specific tasks to carry out, individuals must be able to use their own judgment and foresight to help others and protect themselves. As a member of a platoon, you will be required to work shift work, including evenings and weekends.
In order to function effectively, a Firefighter should have the following characteristics and skills: The candidate must have a proven ability to interact positively with team members, customers and those we serve. He must have the physical strength and capacity for intense and sustained effort. He must have an ability to carry out orders at emergencies, combined with the capacity to assess and act on his own initiative and / or work effectively as a part of a team. He must have a practical understanding of a wide range of subjects related to fire hazards, including the ability to operate and understand the operation of mechanical equipment. He must have concern for the reduction of pain and suffering for victims of emergencies, combined with the personal characteristics including loyalty, dedication, and commitment to duty. He must have the ability to perform Firefighting duties during extremely taxing circumstances, and the ability to learn new concepts, teach others, and to continuously improve performance.

The City of Grande Prairie is an equal opportunity employer and selects candidates on the basis of merit. We invite application from qualified men and women. A policy has been established whereby the applications for the position of Firefighter will be accepted within a specified time frame. The position is advertised in the local media and at fire related schools. Various steps are followed in selecting applicants for the Firefighter position. These take place over a number of weeks and include the following: Application received and processed during the recruitment, as well as those currently on file. Elimination of applications that do not meet the minimum requirements. Written Firefighter Aptitude test (evaluation of the applicant to assess ability to understand instruction, mechanical aptitude, judgement and reasoning). Physical fitness testing at the University of Alberta, with cost of test borne by applicant. Personal interview with hiring board. Medical exam by City Doctor. Security check by RCMP. Reference Checks.
Any applicant deemed not sufficiently qualified at any stage of the testing process, will not proceed further in the selection process. However, any unsuccessful applicants are invited to re-apply in any future recruitment programs.
