Grande Prairie Firefighters organized a fundraiser to help families of emergency personnel that responded to the New York terrorist disaster. Collection points were set up and the Police and EMS departments were asked to join in a 24 hour stair climb marathon. This event began on September 29 and had wonderful community support. All money raised will go directly to families of emergency personnel killed in New York.
The International Association of Firefighters set up one of the funds that will be a recipient of this money. "The International and its members are mourning the loss of our brothers and sisters," said Schaitberger. (President of the IAFF) "There will be many funds established to help the victims. We are encouraging our members to ask other friends of the fire service to donate to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund. This money will go directly to the families of the fallen fire fighters and EMS personnel in New York City."

The following letter outlines the success of this event:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jason Mazurkewich and Todd Russell of the fire department for planning and organizing the 24 hour Charity Stair Climb to raise money for the families of the emergency service workers killed in New York on 11 September 2001.
Over $13,000 was raised at this event. And to do this, firefighters, emergency medical service, police, media, general public and 3 dogs climbed the stairwell in 214 Place. Over 620 trips were made to the top and back down, 310,000 steps in all.
Once again the incredible community spirit of Grande Prairie came through, with money donated, 214 Place management allowing the use of their building, volunteer hours to ease sore muscles by local massage therapists (and boy was the service used), food from Subway and Cup and Caboodle, sign from Lindcor Graphics and many more services provided by citizens of our community.
So to Jason and Todd, plus the numerous helpers from the Fire Department, GPREMS, the RCMP and the public, a magnificent job.
