ICE RESCUE

WATER RESCUE

In 1997 the Grande Prairie Fire Department increased its level of service in water and ice rescue. Members received Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross Swim training, Swift Water Rescue, and Ice Rescue training. We also purchased a 14 ft. commercial grade Zodiac inflatable with a 40 hp. Yamaha outboard jet; and outfitted it with a compliment of safety gear and rescue equipment. For cold weather incidents, we chose Rescue Alive, a collapsible pontoon like sled that could be deployed by one rescuer over ice or water to retrieve a victim.
There are three small bodies of water in Grande Prairie, along with Bear Creek which runs through town. There are numerous lakes around our community, and we are bordered on the south by Wapiti River, and on the north by the mighty Peace River. Our department will respond up to 90 minutes away (response time) to perform a search or rescue.
