Frequently- asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. How are rates for equipment and vehicles set?
  2. What are the criteria for replacement of vehicles and equipment?
  3. How does the department know when a vehicle or piece of equipment is due for servicing?

Q: How are rates for equipment and vehicles set?
The Fleet department uses a "wet lease" arrangement whereby everything except the operator is supplied to the user department. Calculated rates include costs of capital investment, fuel, parts and repairs, insurance, registration, parking and administration. Assumptions regarding utilization and longevity of the piece of equipment are made and necessary recovery costs per hour or per month are calculated. Adjustments are made annually to assure that the Fleet Department recovers all of the costs associated with each vehicle or piece of equipment.

Q: What are the criteria for replacement of vehicles and equipment?
Vehicles and equipment are selected for replacement based on funding availability, operational costs and repair history, vehicle or equipment reliability, and actual utilization.

Q: How does the department know when a vehicle or piece of equipment is due for servicing?
The computerized fueling station downloads fuel consumption and either operating hours or odometer readings to the Vehicle Maintenance Program daily. That program in turn notifies the Serviceman of any units due for servicing. Servicing intervals and criteria are predetermined by the Fleet Department for each vehicle or piece of equipment.
