Q: What is GIS?

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer hardware and software system capable of handling the storage, manipulation, analysis and display of spatial data and related attribute data.  In essence, GIS enables digital mapping information, or CAD (computer aided drafting) files, to graphically represent a database of information.  Example of this, is coordinates in a database for sanitary sewer manholes, can be mapped in GIS, and color coded by the type of manhole, or the year it was installed.
