Succession Planning

Like all organizations, the City of Grande Prairie engages in workforce planning and Succession Planning is one aspect of this process. Succession Planning is very important given the demographic challenges that employers will be facing as the “baby boom” generation retires and the shortage of skilled workers prevails.

Succession Planning will help ensure the continued success of the City of Grande Prairie as the boomers retire, and will enable us to develop capacity for key leadership and technical positions. At the same time, this initiative will allow employees to become the best that they can be within our organization. We are committed to growing our people so that they are ready for emerging opportunities.

We have developed career pathways, identified anticipated vacancy timelines for key positions and have developed a job information database so that both internal and external prospective employees can educate themselves about career possibilities at the City of Grande Prairie!

We are committed to “Optimizing possibilities to build capacity and create opportunties for passionate and engaged employees”

"I have worked for the City of
Grande Prairie
for 18 years and I am always amazed at the opportunities this organization provides. The employees have endless opportunities to cross train and/or advance. “Growing your staff” is an encouraged guideline for supervisors to follow. Staff are also encouraged and supported to be creative with their work and family life schedule. Family and work life balance is a priority in this organization. I am proud to be a part of this organization and I hope to be here for another 18 years."
