Cemetery FAQ's

  1. What should I know about gravesite monuments ?
  2. Who do I see if I have a gravesite inquiry ?
  3. What should I know about flowers or plantings at gravesites?
  4. What are the standard sizes of the adult, child or cremation lots?

Q: What should I know about gravesite monuments ?

The Cemetery Bylaw C-871 specifies what type and height of monuments are allowed. Please contact Cemetery Operations at the City Service Centre for a copy of the bylaw specifications or call (780) 538-0372 or click here to access the City’s bylaws online.

Monuments remain the responsibility of the family of the deceased person. In the event that adjustments or repairs are necessary, the family's respresentative will need to contact a monument company for maintenance. The City does not have the necessary equipment to make repairs to headstones nor do we wish to risk damaging any monuments.  The exception to this would be in the oldest sections of the cemetery where monuments may be at risk of falling over and where there are no longer any family contacts for the deceased.

Q: Who do I see if I have a gravesite inquiry ?
If someone has an inquiry they may contact any Parks staff working at the cemetery.  If no staff are present at the cemetery, assistance is available through cemetery operations located at the City Service Centre at 9505 - 112 Street or by calling (780) 538-0372.  Please note that information is provided under the guidelines of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Protection Act (FOIPP).

Q: What should I know about flowers or plantings at gravesites?

Flowers and shrubs must be planted within the 1-2 foot spacing in front of the headstone and not exceed 3 feet tall.

Both artificial and real flowers arrangements are allowed. Cemetery staff will remove artificial flowers if they have become faded or weather worn and real flowers will be removed once the blooms & leaves have deteriorated.

During severe wind, flowers can be blown off gravesites. If the arrangements are marked they are returned to the gravesite. If not, the flowers are kept for a short period of time to be claimed. Many times wind blown arrangements are damaged beyond keeping and are discarded by cemetery staff.

To extend the durability of an artificial arrangement, families are recommended to place the flowers in a vase or suitable container (avoid easily broken glass). Place the container up off the grass, preferably on the headstone base. This keeps grass from growing up through the arrangements. Sprigs of artificial flowers stuck into the ground are discouraged because of the intensive maintenance required for mowing and weed trimming around the headstone.
