Can I run a hairdressing, massage, or other type of personal care business as a home occupation?
Amendments are currently being made to the Land Use Bylaw to include businesses of this nature as major home occupations. Council will vote on the amendments Sept/ 11/ 2006. Please check back with development permitting after this date.

I’m currently renting my property. Do I need to own my property to apply for a home occupation permit?
YES. A letter of consent is required from the property owner if you rent or are a tenant, to apply for a home occupation.

Q:
What is the difference between a major and minor home occupation?
A Development Officer will review your application and classify whether your home occupation is considered major or minor. If your proposed home occupation is deemed major you require consent from adjacent properties and it will be advertised. Do you issue business licenses?
NO. Enforcement Services issues business licenses for home occupations. However, Enforcement Services will not issue a business license unless your home occupation has been approved by development permitting.

Q:
What isn’t allowed as a home occupation?
Home occupations that are not permitted are:
- Adult entertainment Facility
- Automotive and Recreation vehicle sales, rental, storage, service or repairs
- Dating or escort services
- Industrial vehicle and equipment sales, rental, service, storage, or reapirs
- Retail services or sales except the type listed in section 45.4 of the land use bylaw
- Veterinary services
In addition the City of Grande Prairie Development Authority reserves the right to refuse any proposed home occupation that in their opinion may negetively impact neighbours or does not meet requirements of the Land Use Bylaw.
