Demographic information

Table of contents for this section

The population in the Peace Country has significantly increased since the start of this century.  The City of Grande Prairie's population, which was barely over the 35,000 mark in 2001, passed the 50,000 mark in 2007.

Results of the municipal census undertaken in the late spring of 2007 show the city's new population is 50,227, a 6.69% increase over the 2006 Statistics Canada figure of 47,076.  The city's population has climbed by 12.53% since the 2005 city enumeration, which recorded Grande Prairie with 44,631 residents.

The demographic profile is opposite to the average Canadian community. As Canada’s population shows an aging population, Grande Prairie’s increase is due to the in-migration of young families that are building and shaping the future of our community.
