Grande Prairie Celebrates 50 Years As A City

The City of Grande Prairie is currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary! We are excited to commemorate this special year as we look back at what has been accomplished during this time and look forward to many great things ahead.
Grande Prairie’s history as a City began 50 years ago on February 14, 1958 when district guide and hunter Henry McCullough delivered its charter from Edmonton on horseback (photo on the left courtesy of George Simpson). Twelve thousand people greeted him in 30 below weather. Grande Prairie only had about 8,000 people at the time!
That same community spirit exists today. At over 50,000 people, the city continues to put itself in the spotlight as a beacon of volunteerism and noteworthy accomplishments.
