Sexual Exploitation Awareness and Action Committee

The Sexual Exploitation Awareness and Action Committee performs a wide variety of duties. In addition to providing the community with statistics and information on how prostitution affects the people and neighbourhoods involved, they also help to protect the rights and safety of persons involved in the sex trade and those who are affected by it.

One of the Committee's biggest highlights of last year came when they were able to bring JoAnn McCartney to Grande Prairie for a series of presentations.

JoAnn McCartney is a retired Edmonton Police Service Vice Detective who has been involved in prostitution investigation and intervention for 17 years. She has become very well known for working with individuals engaging in prostitution and supporting them in making changes while successfully bringing those who exploit and abuse them to justice. She now acts as a referral source, life coach and supervisor while survivors attend community programs as part of an individualized case plan to exit prostitution. The presentations offered here in Grande Prairie were "Prostitution Laws, Realities, and Alternatives", "Prostitution: Impacts and Interventions", and "Prostitution: It's about our children".

Next Meeting:  26 September 2007, 12:00 PM
