Date Rape Drug Awareness Campaign Date Rape Drugs

On June 27th 2007, Community Action on Crime Prevention and the Grande Prairie and Area Drug Action Committee launched its Date Rape Awareness Campaign at the Corral. We approached tables of ladies and spoke to them about the dangers of Date Rape Drugs, handing out informational brochures and test coasters that can be used to detect the presence of date rape drugs in drinks. Many of the women we spoke to have either had a personal experience or knew of someone who has been affected by date rape drugs. We also took the opportunity to talk one on one with the staff about what to look for and what role they could play in prevention. The Corral now provides lids for drinks, upon a customer's request.

We continue to visit local drinking establishments with information about Date Rape Drugs. For upcoming dates and locations please visit our Initiatives page.

Most commonly-used date rape drugs, when mixed into a drink, dissolve quickly and do not result in any unusual or detectable odor, colour, or taste.  Because of this, it is difficult to tell when your drink has been drugged, and you should always take all possible precautions to avoid the possibility of somebody slipping something into your drink - don't leave your drink unattended, don't let somebody buy you a drink without you accompanying them to the bar, and make an agreement with your friends to help keep an eye on each other.

If you do believe that you or a friend may have ingested a drugged drink, have a friend (preferably sober) take you home immediately.  If emergency medical assistance is needed, call 911. If you believe that you have experienced a sexual assault while under the influence of these drugs, contact the police, who can advise you of what to do next.
