The Grande Prairie & District Burn Society exists to provide Burn Injury Prevention programs and Survivor Support programs in order to enhance the quality of life in the South Peace area. We provide these programs because preventable burn injuries are unacceptable to our community and acceptance of burn injury survivors by the public will ensure continued growth of a positive, caring community.
The Burn Society delivers the Learn-Not-To-Burn program to a large portion of the Peace Country. The Learn-Not-To-Burn program is a behaviour-based program that teaches kids fire safety in the schools. It is currently presented in almost all schools in the Peace Country. There are over 10,000 students in these schools and we teach lessons to over 3000 students annually. We make use of our ‘KIDS COMMUNITY SAFETY HOUSE’ which is a mobile classroom used to teach the safety lessons. We also run a summer program in local child care facilities using the Safety House.
Secondly, we provide a Burn Survivors Support Fund, which is available to families who are involved in a burn injury. This fund allows financial assistance to families of a person involved in a burn accident to travel with them to the next level of care. We assist with funding for children to attend Children’s Burn Camps where they spend time with children suffering similar injuries. The program will also provide professional support from psychologists. We also provide funds to Survivors to attend the World Burn Congress, which is an annual convention for burn survivors throughout North America.
