Cool Aid Society’s mission is: A drop-in centre offering friendship, guidance and support for youth in Grande Prairie.
Cool Aid Society offers the following services to youth between the ages of six and seventeen:
RECREATION: youth participate in scheduled and spontaneous activities such as playing pool and foosball, going swimming, watching movie, playing sports and doing crafts.
PREVENTION: The staff develop and implement prevention programs for the youth in the areas of self-development, community information, interpersonal development skills, social skills and life skills.
REFERRAL: for youth in times of need and uncertainty we provide referrals to social service agencies, follow-up and support.
Cool Aid Society, a non-profit society, was started in 1979 to meet the needs of youth on the streets. The workers offered friendship, assistance and were a liaison with other agencies in the community. As this was during one of Grande Prairie’s boom periods there were a lot of transient youths. When the economy slowed down the staff found they were dealing with youths facing difficult situations at home. A need for a permanent location where the youth could meet was identified and in 1980 the first Cool Aid Centre was established.
