What is a critical incident?
A critical incident is a traumatic event having an impact on groups of people and overwhelming their abilities to cope.
What is critical response?
A “critical response” provides coordinated crisis intervention service following a critical incident.
What is a debriefing?
A “critical incident stress debriefing “is a structured psychological and educational support group discussion facilitated by a specially trained team of mental health personnel. The main objectives are to lesson the impact of a traumatic event and to quicken the return to routine functioning.
When should a formal debriefing occur?
For maximum benefit, a critical incident stress debriefing should occur within 72 hours of the incident.
· After witnesses have given statements to safety/criminal investigators.
Who conducts a debriefing/response?
The Critical Response Team is a network of professionals trained in critical incident stress debriefing. The members of this team are volunteers.
The Critical Response Team provides the following services:
· Coordination /consultation
· Defusing
· Critical incident stress debriefing
· School critical response
· Large community meetings
· Referral
· Establishing protocols of response
· Training
The Critical Response Team does not provide:
· Conduct a debriefing unless invited to do so.
