The COP program exists in communities across Western Canada, and began in Grande PrairiCOP Logoe in 1995. Its purpose is for dedicated community volunteers to be of assistance to the police by deterring crime or observing and reporting any possible criminal activity within the area in which they reside. The Patrol was not designated to replace the regular police, but operates under the direction of the RCMP to be an extra set of "eyes and ears" to assist and allow police to direct their focus to other areas of potential crime.
