Taxi Bill of Rights

Passengers

As a taxi passenger, you have the right to:

  • Be picked up and transported to your destination by any available on duty taxi driver;
  • Pay the posted rate, by cash, accepted credit or debit card, as posted on the taxi;
  • Obtain a receipt for your fare, if requested;
  • Travel with an assistance dog or portable mobility aid;
  • Travel in a taxi that is clean, smoke free and in good repair;
  • Be transported by a chauffeur who is neat, clean, civil, and well behaved;
  • Be transported by a chauffeur with a reasonable knowledge of the City;
  • Be transported by a chauffeur who does not knowingly deceive you about a location, destination, or arrival/departure of a public conveyance;
  • Have any baggage or personal property delivered to you as you request;
  • Direct the route or expect the most economical route; and a quiet atmosphere.

Drivers

As a taxi driver, you must obey all laws and have the right to refuse to transport a passenger:

  • To protect the driver’s, or any passenger’s, health and safety;
  • If the passenger is acting in an offensive or aggressive manner;
  • If the passenger refuses to provide a deposit, if requested to do so; or
  • To avoid contravening a law.

Each taxi shall:

  • Prominently display the name and phone number of the taxi broker on the exterior of the vehicle; including a vehicle ID number
  • Display an illuminated roof light
  • Display on each rear door window the current rates of the taxi broker
