Located at the south entrance to the Montrose Cultural Centre, Mamawe concourse provides an active pedestrian link within the City of Grande Prairie’s Cultural Business District. The site features a large, open space designed for year-round community activities such as outdoor programming, cultural celebrations, and public events as well as a variety of seating areas for passive recreation or gathering, indigenous vegetation and the future home of the City’s Cultural Community Garden.

This community gathering space is available for public use, free of charge. Bookings for the Mamawe Concourse are available through the Montrose Cultural Centre by calling 780-357-4987 or email culture@cityofgp.com for more information.

Meaning behind the Name

The name Mawawe is given to the concourse in recognition for the present and future respectful treatment of the Indigenous members of our community. The name Mamawe is a Woodland Cree term meaning Gathering Place. The name Mamawe Concourse reflects the essence of the space, a gathering place for all community cultures in the heart of the City.

Official Opening Ceremony

An official opening ceremony for Mamawe Concourse is on Friday, September 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The ceremony will honour the indigenous name and intent of the site with guest speakers, traditional prayer, smudging ceremony, multicultural performances and a community BBQ.
