GP Museum 2017 Lantern Tours Cancelled

2017 Lantern Tours at the Grande Prairie Museum are cancelled.

lanternProgramming and Events Coordinators with the City of Grande Prairie’s Culture and Heritage Department cite a lack of response by the public for volunteer opportunities with the event, have led to the cancellation.

For many years, Lantern tours was a collaboration between the Grande Prairie Regional College’s (GPRC) Fine Arts Faculty (Drama) and the Grande Prairie Museum. With the drama program not available last term, planning was not possible over the summer.

The GPRC’s newly hired Drama Instructor, Michelle Rios, expressed enthusiasm for the community based production in a meeting with the Programming and Events Coordinators with the Culture and Heritage Department. Josephine Sallis, Archivist with the South Peace Regional Archives also attended the meeting and expressed interest in assisting drama students with the historical research component of the event.

“In the past, students from the drama program wrote, coordinated and acted out the skits that made up Lantern Tours,” says Robyn Termeer, Programming and Events Coordinator. “We met with the new Drama Instructor this month, but there just wasn’t enough time to put the event together for October”.

The Grande Prairie Museum, Grande Prairie Regional College and South Peace Regional Archives intend to explore future collaboration and partnership opportunities with Lantern Tours for 2018.
