City of Grande Prairie Fire Chief Dan Lemieux will be taking on a new challenge as Director of Emergency Services/Fire Chief with Strathcona County, commencing this fall.
Chief Lemieux has been with the City of Grande Prairie for 27 years, spending 15 with the Fire Department and the last nine years as Fire Chief.
“My wife Cheryl and I have been considering a move to the capital region to be closer to family. This is a great opportunity for us and it came earlier than we anticipated,” says Lemieux. “I feel blessed to have had a very diverse career. The City has been a great employer that has provided me ample opportunity to grow and develop strong leadership and business skills.”
Lemieux started employment with the City in 1988 and has been the Department Manager for Facility Maintenance, Parks, Fleet Services, Transportation, Enforcement Services and Fire. In addition to this, he spent several years working as a Human Resources Consultant for the City.
When asked about the accomplishments he is most proud of Lemieux states, “Fire Fighting is an inherently dangerous occupation. The health and safety of employees has always remained my number one priority. Together with my Fire Administration Team, working with the Firefighters’ Association and with support from City Council, we have been able to implement a Wellness-Fitness Program, a new Blue Card Incident Command system and recently, we have upgraded our radio communication system. All of these improvements contribute greatly to employee health and safety.”
Lemieux is proud of the positive labour relations climate at the Fire Department. “Both union and management recognize that we will not always agree on everything, however, our interactions are always positive and respectful. I refer to it as healthy tension in labour relations.”
Another accomplishment is the planning, design and construction of the Westgate Fire Station. “We have received so many compliments from external fire personnel on the functionality of that station. The reason for our success was the involvement of front line personnel in the planning and design of the facility”.
