Elm Tree Pruning
Parks Operations have begun Elm Tree pruning throughout the city.

Pruning will take place from October,1 to March, 31. The arborists will be concentrating on removing dead wood from City owned elms. Many of these trees line residential streets. Residents are asked to approach tree crews with caution and obey all signage

Background

Provincial requirements do not allow Elm Tree pruning from April, 1 to September, 30. This is to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED).
DED is spread by the Elm Bark Beetle. These beetles are attracted to freshly cut areas or open wounds of the tree and will quickly infect any neighbouring elms. Proper pruning techniques will remove any dead or damaged branches, which discourage infestations.

It is important that the elm pruning program begins in the allowable time frame. Arborists aim to prevent DED, plus ensure the tree has proper structure and form.

For more information about Elm Tree pruning or DED, residents can contact Parks Operations at 780-830-5018 or online at www.cityofgp.com/trees.
