City Manager - January 2017Robert (Bob) Nicolay brings a diverse management background in the municipal, energy (oil, gas and power), and Olympic fundraising sectors together as he leads a City of Grande Prairie team of 800 employees. Appointed by City Council as the Chief Administrative Officer (City Manager) of the organization in February 2017, Bob’s role is to ensure effective and efficient strategic and operational leadership as the policies and programs of the municipality are implemented.

In additional to overall leadership of the municipality and its $170-million annual budget, Bob oversees the Human Resources, Organizational Development, Economic Development, Legislative Services and Intergovernmental Affairs departments. Bob is also the Director of Disaster Services which involves managing and responding to local area disasters.

Prior to joining the City of Grande Prairie, Bob was President of Bluenergy Solarwind Canada and Chief Operating Officer of Bluenergy Solarwind Inc (Houston). A former Chief Administrative Officer at the City of Medicine Hat, Bob has held several senior executive and board positions in the private sector, including ENMAX Corporation where he served as President and CEO; Oak Point Energy, where he was a founding partner, Co-Chief Executive Officer and President; and the Canadian Olympic Development Association, where he served as President and CEO. Bob is also a former Vice President of Business Development at Pengrowth Energy Corporation where he led the global oil and gas mergers and acquisitions functions for the company.

Bob holds a Masters of Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University in Florida, a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary, as well as diplomas in business administration and advanced management. He also holds an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and has served as director on numerous boards over his career.

He has two grown daughters – one resides in Calgary, the other in Australia. Away from the office, Bob enjoys collecting artwork, attending live theatre productions, traveling, hiking, cycling, and golfing.
