Council Highlights for August 13, 2018

Here are the highlights from the City Council meeting on August 13, 2018.


  • A delegation from the Alberta Summer Games Board attended City Council to present the City with a commemorative gift in thanks of the support for a successful event. On behalf of the City, Councillor O'Toole accepted the commemorative gifts from the Alberta Summer Games.
  • A delegation from the Bear Creek Folk Festival attended City Council to provide an update on this weekend's festival and to thank the City for their support of the annual musical event.
  • Other delegations who attended City Council this evening include representatives from the Grande Prairie Stompede and from the Mountview Neighbourhood Association. In response to the delegation from Mountview Neighbourhood Association, Council referred the topic of crime trends to the appropriate standing committee.

Arbour Hills Area Structure Plan

  • Council gave the third reading to the Arbour Hills Area Structure Plan (Bylaw C-1212H), Arbour Hills 2 Outline Plan (Bylaw C-1281-4), and the Land Use Bylaw (Bylaw C-1260-99). Council approved the proposed amendments. This amendment re-designates 2.86 ha from General Commercial (CG) to General Residential (RG), resulting in approximately 50 new single detached residential lots. With the newly designated residential lots being in such close proximity to Highway 670, a boulevard, berm and cycling trails will be installed to meet the engineering standards for residential arterial roadways.

Hughes Lake Area Structure Plan

  • The Hughes Lake Area Structure Plan (Bylaw C-1367) was adopted by Council. This Area Structure Plan covers approx. 19 quarter-sections of previously annexed land located west and northwest of the Grande Prairie airport. The plan is in preparation for development opportunities in the area that are anticipated after the completion of Hwy 43X.

Future Expenditures Reserve

  • Council approved $75,000 in bridge financing, from the Future Expenditures Reserve, to the 2018 Alberta Summer Games Society, to be repaid in full by February 2019.

Large Scale Tourism Events Fund

  • Council approved $100,000 in funding for the Bear Creek Folk Festival from the Large Scale Tourism Events Fund for 2018.
  • $75,000 from the Large Scale Tourism Events Fund was also approved by Council for the Grande Prairie Stompede Association for 2018.

Honorary Roadway Name Request

  • Council approved the request by the Royal Canadian Legion for an honorary roadway naming of 101 Avenue between 102 Street and 98 Street to “Veterans Way.”

Alberta Community Partnership Program

  • Council directed Mayor Given to write a letter of support for the Town of Sexsmith’s application for a Regional Growth Study under the Alberta Community Partnership Program.

County of Grande Prairie Correction Line Area Structure Plan

  • Council passed two motions regarding the Correction Line Area Structure Plan, including directing Mayor Given and the City Manager to contact their counterparts in the County to continue discussions and for management to proceed with filing an objection to the Province in advance of this week’s deadline on August 16, 2018.
