When Rev. Alexander Forbes and his wife Agnes came to the Grande Prairie area in 1910 it took them 73 days on the Athabasca Trail from Fort Saskatchewan. They began in bitter minus 40 winter weather and arrived fighting off hordes of mosquitos.
It was an arduous trip and along the way Mrs. Forbes lost most of their clothes when the crate they were in fell off a raft midstream. She was forced to wear moccasins to preserve her boots. One thing that did survive was her fine china tea set.
In those early rough pioneer days one of the few refined social events offered was afternoon tea with Mrs. Forbes. Rev. Forbes was the Presbyterian Minister and both were involved in the development of the Grande Prairie community. It would have been seen a special treat to be invited by Mrs. Forbes for tea.
