Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Initiative

The Welcoming and Inclusive Communities initiative focuses on creating strong communities, where diversity adds to the social and economic vibrancy of the community and the quality of life enjoyed by all residents.

The City of Grande Prairie’s Welcome and Inclusive Communities Committee officially unveiled a video of best practise on December 17th 2012: http://youtu.be/cys0KQPKvpc

The video showcases agency members of the Welcoming and Inclusive Communities Committee working collaboratively to support newcomers in Grande Prairie. Agencies include ACFA Régionale de Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie Centre for Newcomers and Council for Life Long Learning.

The video was funded and produced by the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA).

Community Mapping Project

This project is the result of a community mapping initiative lead by community partners in the City of Grande Prairie. Community Mapping is an effective tool for enhancing relationships between human service partners, engaging people in talking about their community, making evidenced based decisions, and collaborative planning. Two groups worked with Community Social Development and Perfecting Tomorrow Inc. to develop the Social Atlas. Those groups are:

  1. Youth Mapping Initiative (YMAP) which consists of the following community partners:
    Alberta Health Services, Addiction Services (Youth Detox), Pregnant and Parenting Teens, GP Public School District, GP Catholic School District, Crime Prevention, John Howard Society Tabano Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Cool Aid Society, GP Friendship Centre, CFSA, GP Youth Emergency Shelter Society, Camp Tamarack, Catholic Family Services
  2. Welcoming and Inclusive Mapping Initiative (WIMAP), which consists of the following community partners:
    GP Centre for Newcomers, AFCA, GP Centre for Life Long Learning, ACT Grande Prairie, Welcome Wagon
