What is the Isabel Campbell Heritage Preservation Award?Isabel Campbell

The Grande Prairie Museum and the Pioneer Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District created the Isabel Campbell Heritage Preservation Award to honour the late Miss Campbell.

This award was presented to deserving individuals whom devoted countless hours to organizations that advocated for the preservation of heritage in our region.

Who is Isabel Campbell?

In 1961, when the Pioneer Museum Society of Grande Prairie & District was established, Miss Isabel Campbell was elected the first secretary. This was at the beginning of her career as Grande Prairie’s most well-known historian.

Over a period of over 40 years, Miss Campbell directed the community’s attention to the importance of our history by writing historical news articles and books, archiving records, cataloguing information, and communicating her love of history and the Peace Country.

Miss Campbell’s contributions to Alberta’s heritage were recognized by federal, provincial and municipal governments and organizations in many citations and awards.

When she passed away in 1998, a portion of her estate and many artifacts from her life were donated to the Grande Prairie Museum. The Isabel Campbell Award was established in 2001.

Museum Society and Isabel Campbell Award Dissolved

On Saturday, May 13, 2017 during an Annual General Meeting, the museum society of Grande Prairie and District unanimously voted to dissolve as a Society. The society had achieved their mission and purpose to preserve local history and offer a tourist attraction through a volunteer-operated museum when the Grande Prairie Museum transferred to the City of Grande Prairie in 2007.

The Museum Society also voted to discontinue the regional Isabel Campbell Award, as there were no other societies available to sustain it.
