This program helps to develop students’ awareness and appreciation of the Aboriginal (First Nations, Metis, Inuit)culture of Alberta’s Peace Country Region. Students will gain an understanding of our regional history from an Aboriginal perspective and how Aboriginal peoples’ basic human needs shaped their lifestyle and culture.

Students will explore the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and societal roles and make their own tipi, canoe, beaded keychain, and play traditional Aboriginal games.

Activities:

  • Individually create a paper tipi and/or canoe
  • Play traditional Aboriginal games which were designed to hone hunting skills
  • Create a beaded keychain or piece of jewellery
  • Discover the different uses of the bison
  • Learn how to say different words in Cree (numbers, animals, etc.)
