There has been a growing interest within the city in edible landscaping, including orchards and community gardens.  In 2014, the City of Grande Prairie passed an Edible Landscaping Policy and Procedure to address this public interest and began planting orchards and incorporating fruit-bearing shrubs into existing beds.  The goal is to provide fresh, seasonal, pesticide-free fruit to the public free of charge.  This initiative will have many benefits, including:

  • promoting healthy eating
  • providing teaching opportunities for children and adults
  • increasing plant diversity within Grande Prairie's urban forest
  • assisting citizens with rising produce prices
  • showcasing fruit varieties specifically bred for northern prairie climates
