Oct 2016 Artifact of the MonthWhat lunch box did you have as a kid? I had a Bugs Bunny one and my brother had the Road Runner and Coyote. During the 1950’s, western themed products were popular with children. Aladdin Industries of Nashville, Tennessee is credited with creating the first character lunchbox in 1950. It featured Hopalong Cassidy. This Chuckwagon themed lunch box and thermos came out a few years later and sold well throughout the 1960’s.

This is just one of the many artifacts we are getting ready for the upcoming Chuckwagon Exhibit in the Kin Gallery of the Heritage Discovery Centre. This exhibit has taken a lot longer to create than originally thought so we thank you for your patience. It is definitely coming and will feature not only Chuckwagons as a racing sport, but its evolution from a travelling kitchen developed in the 1860’s. Keep watching for details.
