Traffic Signal Over-Ride on 101 Street and 100 Avenue Resolved
Posted Date: 8/10/2017

On Wednesday, August 10 at approximately 3:45 p.m. an emergency services vehicle over-rode the existing traffic signal at the intersection of 100 Avenue and 101 Street.

The signal, which had been placed on a permanent green to accommodate traffic patterns during construction, switched to a permanent red. Westbound traffic on 100 Avenue was temporarily affected.

The City of Grande Prairie was notified of this issue through social media at approximately 4:05 p.m. and immediately took steps to resolve the issue. The traffic signal was restored by a manual re-set at approximately 4:30 p.m.

The switch to a permanent red traffic signal was not a result of construction on the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscapes Project. Emergency services vehicles are equipped with technology connected to traffic signals in order to reduce emergency response times.

This incident is an isolated scenario. Steps by City Traffic Engineers have been taken to ensure this does not occur in the future. The City thanks the citizens who brought this to our attention, it resulted in a quick resolution.
