The City of Grande Prairie hosted a gala last night to celebrate members of the community who volunteer directly with the organization and its many departments.
The event included the presentation of three awards and an address from guest speaker Councillor Clayton.
The Bill Bowes Volunteer Organization of the Year Award was presented to the Technical Search and Rescue Association (T.S.R.). This award is granted to volunteer organizations or foundations that have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the community.
For over 22 years TSR has been dedicated to providing essential services and education to Grande Prairie in the field of search and rescue. Their volunteers are industry-trained and serve over 500 hours per year in the community providing top-quality, provincially-recognized professional response.
The George Repka Outstanding Achievement Awards were presented to Mr. Bill Corcoran and Mr. Ken O’Shea individually. The award aims to recognize individuals who have exhibited over twenty years of service to the community in the areas of recreation, culture or social services.
Corcoran was honoured for his nearly 30 years experiencing volunteering in the recreation sector, including major development in the areas of track and field. Highlights of his accomplishments include co-founding, operating and coaching the Wapiti Striders/ Peace Country Wolves Athletic Club and establishing the Wolves XC Running Series. He also coached and organized track and field activities at the local, provincial and national level.
O’Shea was also recognized for his over 50 years of making an impact on the community through his volunteer work. This includes achievements such as serving as a Founding Director for what is now the DownTown Association, the founding Chairman for the Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools Foundation and in many valuable roles at the Rotary Club of Grande Prairie.
The Volunteer Recognition Gala is held annually to recognize individuals who volunteer directly with the City. This may include Council Committee Members, event volunteers, people who assist with City initiatives and outreach, and many other roles across all departments.
