Refugee Awareness Project Coming to Grande Prairie

UPDATE: The dates for the sessions were originally scheduled for May 2 and 3 but have now been rescheduled to June 21 and June 22.

On June 21 and 22, the Grande Prairie Local Immigration Partnership (GPLIP) is hosting the Edmonton Centre for Race and Culture to facilitate Refugee Awareness for Enhanced Service Delivery workshops.

Refugee Awareness Training

The workshops are a project to provide accurate and comprehensive information about refugees to host communities. This workshop will support individuals and organizations in understanding the pre-migration experiences of refugees, offer practical tools for working with refugee families and provide ideas for creating welcoming and inclusive environments that ensure sustainable and successful resettlement of refugees in Alberta.

The key learning objectives of the workshop are to:

  • Learn about refugee pathways and the global and historical contexts to the most recent resettlement efforts
  • Describe barriers and opportunities when working with refugee individuals and families
  • Practice using reflective and analytical tools to build their inclusive and equitable practices for refugee individuals and families
  • Plan for modifications to policies or service-delivery practices to create more inclusive environments

The Edmonton Centre for Race and Culture is dedicated to addressing racism and encouraging intercultural understanding. It focuses on workplace development, community building, research and education. 

About the Grande Prairie Local Immigration Partnership (GPLIP)

GPLIP is a partnership between Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the City of Grande Prairie through the Community Social Development department that supports the development of a community-based planning around the needs of newcomer settlement and integration.
