Drivers are reminded to use caution on the morning of Thursday, May 3 as the City of Grande Prairie’s Parks Operations completes a Highway 43- West litter pick up.
110 Parks Operations staff from the City of Grande Prairie will be highly visible picking litter along the highway. The pick-up takes place from 7:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m.
Reduced speed limit signs will begin at the corner of 116 Street and Highway 43 and run all the way west to city limits. Speed limits will be reduced to 60km/hr and there will be an increased bylaw presence on the road during this time. Drivers are advised to slow down, obey speed limits and watch for pedestrians, slow moving vehicles and garbage bags on the road.
In 2017, Parks Operations picked litter along this stretch of highway three times during the summer months and a total of 8.92 tonnes (19,622lbs) of garbage was cleaned up from May to July. This is the equivalent of 785 25 pound garbage bags along a 7 kilometre stretch of road.
Residents are reminded that littering fines are $115 each and fines for unsecured loads are $400 each and are encouraged to dispose of their garbage and recycling in the proper receptacles.
