Municipal Government Day Honours 60 Years

The City of Grande Prairie’s annual community celebration is set for Tuesday, June 12 at Revolution Place.MGD2018

Municipal Government Day is a free event that features a barbecue and family entertainment including face painting, bouncy castles, henna, sand art, a City equipment display, as well as municipal and community information exhibits. Activities will be indoors and outdoors, weather permitting.

The Amazing Race in partnership with the Grande Prairie Get Active Network, a friendly regional municipalities competition, and a youth art contest are other highlights.

The free event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free transit is provided from noon to 8 p.m.

This year’s theme is Grande Prairie – 60 Years Strong in recognition that 2018 marks 60 years since Grande Prairie became a City.

Youth Art Contest

Young artists in the community are encouraged to match this year’s Municipal Government Day theme by presenting submissions reflecting the city since 1958 or focusing on what Grande Prairie might look like in the next six decades. Entries are due by Thursday, May 30. Prizes will be presented at the June 18 City Council meeting.

The contest is open to students in three categories: Up to Grade 3, Grades 4-9 and Grades 10-12. For details, visit

The overall prize is an iPad. The winner in each grade category is awarded a bicycle and helmet. Second and third place winners receive Eastlink Centre passes.

There are numerous ways to match the theme. Artists can draw, paint, sculpt or use PowerPoint and videos to depict their vision of Grande Prairie over the past 60 years or the next 60 years.
