A community memorial is being held on Thursday, May 31 in remembrance of those who have lost their lives while experiencing homelessness in Grande Prairie.
The 3rd Annual Healing Hearts Homeless Memorial is open to all members of the public, community agencies and individuals experiencing homelessness to recognize and remember the people in their lives who have passed away while experiencing homelessness. It features an Elder’s prayer, traditional drumming and dancing and lived experience speakers.
The event takes place from 11:30 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. by the train trestle in Muskoseepi Park.
A free community barbeque is taking place after the event courtesy of the Rotary Clubs of Grande Prairie.
“People experiencing homelessness love passionately and grief as deeply as those who have a stable home. Their deaths can go unnoticed as there may not be recognition that the cause of death was related to the state of being homeless,” says Katherine Schmidt, Homeless Initiatives Supervisor.
“To provide honour and dignity through recognition that people can die from the effects of being homeless is important and to provide an opportunity to grieve for the people impacted by the loss.”
The memorial is brought to you by Community Social Development, in partnership with Odyssey House, YMCA of Northern Alberta, ACFA Regionale de Grande Prairie, Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Rotary House, HeARTh Social Profit and the Northern Addictions Centre.
