This event also marks the grand opening of the Grande Prairie Museum’s Heritage Village 2018 summer season. A cake-cutting takes place in the Community Room at 11:00 a.m. with museum mascots joining the fun to celebrate.

The theme for International Museum Day 2018 is “Hyper-connected museums: new approaches, new publics.” It was selected by the International Council of Museums in reference the multiple means of communications we have today and how our global network of connections is becoming more complex, diverse and integrated.

The International Council of Museums has celebrated International Museum Day since 1977 to raise awareness the importance that museums have in promoting cultural connections, understanding and community. In 2017, more than 37,000 museums participated in the event in over 150 countries. Grande Prairie has participated since 2014.
