The City of Grande Prairie launched a new online interactive map of all the parks across the city today.
The map displays every park in Grande Prairie on an interactive map that users can move around. It includes playgrounds, outdoor sports and fitness amenities, outdoor rinks and off-leash dog parks. Each park listing provides a location and brief description including playground surface type and available amenities.
Within the map, users are able to zoom in by neighbourhood, use the ‘locator’ tool to have it identify their current location, or search by neighbourhood or park name.
“We wanted to create a directory for our parks that was easy and simple for residents to use to explore everything that is available. For parents, we know it can be really important to know what type of surfaces playgrounds have or if washrooms are available, so this is the type of information we wanted to include,” says Amy Needham with Parks Operations.
“It’s also a really valuable tool for newcomers who can use it to learn more about what’s available in their neighbourhood and community while using the zoom or locator tools to navigate.”
The project was a collaboration between the Parks Operations and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) departments at the City of Grande Prairie.
“Our team was able to produce this new map in-house with the technology and expertise we have right within our own department. One of the features we are most proud of is the responsive design, which means the map will display differently depending on the device you’re viewing it on to ensure the most user-friendly experience,” says Kent Bowman, GIS Manager.
