At the City of Grande Prairie we believe in lifelong learning and are financially committed to this principle. Our staff development fund supports both training and career development.

Corporate Training

A portion of the overall budget is set aside for corporate training and it includes priorities like:

  • Health & Safety Training 
  • Change Management 
  • Communication 
  • Computer Training 
  • Conflict Resolution 
  • Leadership Development

Leadership Development

The City of Grande Prairie develops its current and future leaders to meet the needs of the organization into the future. This is accomplished through ongoing leadership training offered through Northern Lakes College (Essential Skills for Supervisors and Advanced Skills for Leaders).

In addition to these programs, the City has developed its own Leadership Institute, one of the first for municipalities, in conjunction with Northern Lakes College. This intensive 22 day program that occurs over 12-14 months prepares our staff for their next career move within the organization and allows the organization to ensure it has the resources required for all many areas of work that it has!

Department-Specific Training

Each department develops its own training plan. Employee needs are considered in developing these plans based on performance management discussions and career aspirations.

Succession Planning

Like all organizations, the City of Grande Prairie engages in workforce planning and Succession Planning is one aspect of this process. Succession Planning is very important given the demographic challenges that employers will be facing as the “baby boom” generation retires and the shortage of skilled workers prevails.

Succession Planning will help ensure the continued success of the City of Grande Prairie as the boomers retire, and will enable us to develop capacity for key leadership and technical positions. At the same time, this initiative will allow employees to become the best that they can be within our organization. We are committed to growing our people so that they are ready for emerging opportunities.

We have developed career pathways, identified anticipated vacancy timelines for key positions and have developed career pathway information so that both internal and external prospective employees can educate themselves about career possibilities at the City of Grande Prairie!
