Minute Pirate Bug
Minute pirate bug adult.


Minute pirate bugs (Orius spp.) are small insects about 3 mm in length with wings that lie diagonally flat across the back, giving them a conspicuous black and white pattern.


Both the nymphs (immature stage) and the adults are predaceous and may consume dozens of mites or aphids each day.

Minute pirate bugs overwinter as adults in protected places and emerge in the next spring to lay eggs. There are multiple generations each year and the bugs can be found on both garden and field crops.
