About the Presentation

The Domestic Violence Toolkit for Landlords presentation is part of a CPLEA project to help victims of domestic violence. It intends to raise awareness of resources and services that landlords can use to prevent and respond to domestic violence on their premises.

Landlord Cafe 2018

The toolkit was published in April 2018 and is designed for landlords, property managers and anyone else who works on-site or has access to a residential rental unit. It includes:
Information on how to help prevent domestic violence
What to do when domestic violence occurs
A list of services tenants can call for help
A list of agencies to contact for more information about domestic violence
A list of educational resources to learn more about domestic violence

It was created through partnerships with Calgary Residential Rental Association, Stop Abuse in Families, and the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters as well as all the landlords, property managers and domestic violence agencies that supported the project. Funding was made possible by the Alberta Status of Women.

Guest Speakers

Guest speakers include Lois Gander, professor at the University of Alberta whose legal research has focus on assisting landlords prevent and address domestic violence on their premises, and Jeff Surtes, Executive Director of CPLEA with nearly 30 years experience in the legal and non-profit sector helping people understand laws that affect their lives.
