All members of the public are invited to immerse themselves in diverse Indigenous cultural teachings at Orange Shirt Day this Saturday as part of Alberta Culture Days.
Presented by the City of Grande Prairie and the Grande Prairie Aboriginal Circle of Services (GPACOS), Orange Shirt Day aims to continue the dialogue on the effects of the residential school system, particularly children’s loss of culture. Part of the way this dialogue is being passed on is by sharing Indigenous teaching in ways that previous generations did not have the right to.
Ways to Participate
Traditional elements such as drum-making, pop-up beading and jigging are a few of the cultural sharing opportunities that are being facilitated at the event for individuals to participate in.
Family-centred activities such as a trivia game, children’s crafts, bannock making and a blanket exercise are also scheduled throughout the afternoon.
“With events like Orange Shirt Day we are able to reclaim our cultural rights and freedoms by having a venue to share cultural teachings to younger Indigenous generations and community members of all cultural backgrounds,” says Michelle Grant, Regional Manager of Aboriginal Services at the Northwest Community and Social Services.
Multi-generational dancers, singers and speakers are also to be featured throughout the event.
Orange Shirt Day takes place on September 30, 2017 from 1:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. at the Mamawe Concourse at the Montrose Cultural Centre.
Alberta Culture Days takes place across multiple venues in the city from Friday, September 29- Sunday, October 1 promoting engagement in arts and culture to create vibrant communities.
